Blue and white buildings, sunny cobblestone streets, cascading bougainvillea, and endless views of the Aegean…Greece has a way of making you reach for your camera each time you turn a corner.

Below are 15 photos I keep coming back to. Together, they capture the feeling of wandering through the Greek islands, the whitewashed villages, and the unmistakable charm of nautical scenes and vibrant banisters and doors. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Greece, or maybe you want to relive the magic, these moments capture the feelings that have made trips to Greece so desirable.

Here’s a glimpse of my recent trip to Athens, Mykonos and Paros through 15 of my favorite photos.

1. The Hibiscus Breakfast Table

Breakfast time in Mykonos. There’s nothing like enjoying a freddo cappuccino, fresh-squeezed orange juice, a ham and cheese crepe and a tomato feta omelette while watching the morning unfold around you.

2. Octopus Out to Dry

A quintessential Greek island scene: fresh-caught octopus drying out in the sun beside the fishing boats on the promenade, blowing gently in the breeze. A simple, laid-back reflection of life in Paros.

3. All Blue and White

There’s something so satisfying about the iconic blue-domed Greek Orthodox churches across the islands, especially here against the deep blue sky. They are even more breathtaking in person.

4. Corner Store in Lefkes

While walking through Lefkes after a scenic ATV ride, I found this corner store to be so picturesque. Green doors, signs painted in Greek (a small detail that made it feel local) and a skinny little refrigerator filled with chilled drinks on a hot June day. Plus the flag in the wind, the whitewashed buildings and cobblestone streets – it made me stop in my tracks.

5. Best Seat on the Island of Paros

The table on this boat is the table I was given for my last dinner in Paros: two pastel colored chairs with the colorful sunset beginning over the Aegean. I felt like the luckiest girl on the island with a view like this.

6. Perfect Walk

The streets in Mykonos are almost like a maze. When you’ve never been before, you turn corner after corner, but you’re not sure where you’re headed. But around each corner, the streets look something like this: radiant plants and flowers overhead, eye-catching accents on windows, doors and railings, white walls and stone paths…so you definitely don’t have a bad view as you try to figure out your way around.

7. Cyclades Kitty

The likely friends you’ll meet in Greece, besides the welcoming locals, are the many cats. They lounge, sleep, sunbathe and sit pretty across the islands, and this cat resting in the shade on the chair of a taverna made me stop to capture the serene moment in a photo.

8. Mykonos Mills

You can see the blue, red and white of Little Venice from the windmills in Mykonos. The white buildings reflect off of the impossibly blue ocean, and behind it the rocky hills contrast against the cloudless sky.

9. Aegean Beach View

You can imagine my excitement after walking a dirt road in Mykonos to find this beach, where I’d spend the rest of my day in the sun. We took off our shoes, climbed down the massive rocks, and set up towels in the sand. It almost didn’t feel real – how lucky we were to get be completely surrounded by such a postcard-worthy landscape.

10. Bougainvillea and the Blue Door

While exploring Lefkes in Paros, we came across this famous photo spot. I’m calling it “Bougainvillea and the Blue Door.” The picture doesn’t do it justice – those flowers are so lush, and this particular street is quaint and quiet. Lefkes was one of the more peaceful places we explored as we walked in silence and made friends with kitties out front of churches and homes.

11. Not Your Typical Island Sunset

A sunset in Greece is a treat: it’s a colorful tableau over the sea, the sky spotted with clouds, the horizon with ships and lights. Watching it from the sandy shore was the perfect after-dinner experience to look forward to each night.

12. The Caryatids

The best part of the Greek ruins for me was seeing The Caryatids, the six female statues on the Erechtheion, one of the temples on the Acropolis in Athens. They are among the most recognizable examples of ancient Greek architecture, and these beautiful sculptures kept me coming back for photos and admiration.

13. Naoussa At Dusk

The shades of the sky shifted into an ombré of blue as the sun went down, casting a glow over these fishing boats and making for a magical stroll along the docks – with gelato, of course! An ocean breeze made the evening chilly as we wandered, basking in the whimsy of this nautical scene.

14. Little White Houses

Another beach day on the itinerary, this time in Paros. The wind was something you couldn’t believe, and the water was chilly, but the sun kept us toasty on the sand. The view of the white buildings from the rocks inspired us to sit and admire all of the different shapes and little windows.

15. My First Meal in Greece

After a long trek to our Airbnb after we first landed, I was jet-lagged, hungry and sweaty… but this Greek salad drenched in fresh olive oil and spices, bread straight our of the oven and iced freddo cappuccino revived me. It was my first taste of Greek cuisine in Athens, and it was perfect.

The Feelings Behind the Obsession

And maybe that’s the real reason for the Greece obsession… the everyday moments that remind you to slow down, enjoy each step, each meal, each coffee, and take in the wonder of the place. Greece has a way of making you want to stay just a little longer, to be part of the culture and the day to day life for more than just a quick trip. These 15 photos are my attempt to capture that feeling, but I have a feeling you’ll understand it best once you experience it for yourself.
