Athens, Greece is a city where ancient history, delicious food, lively neighborhoods, and stunning rooftop views all come together.
Whether you’re visiting Greece for the first time, looking to experience something beyond the typical tourist attractions, or hoping to enjoy a slower day exploring the city, there’s plenty to fit into 24 hours… And here’s exactly how to plan your day based on the type of vibe you are looking for.

Choose Your Athens Itinerary
This is the first in what I hope to make a new series: “Choose Your Itinerary.”
Different travelers have different priorities when seeing a city, and I hope to offer some inspiration for whatever type of vibe you happen to be searching for.
If you’re anything like me and you don’t fit exactly into one traveling style (adventurous one day, artsy the next, foodie the day after that), pull a few ideas from each itinerary and make the day your own.
How Can You Spend One Day in Athens?
I recently started putting together different ways to experience Athens, because not every traveler wants the same kind of day.
It depends on a lot of factors, especially two very drastic possibilities: a first time tourist is going to have different prerogatives than a seasoned visitor.

That’s why I’ve put together three different one-day Athens itineraries. Each one has a slightly different focus so you can choose the option that best matches your travel style.
While you might start with the “first time” itinerary for your first trip to Athens, save this article and choose the “Athens for Foodies” itinerary during your next visit.
Which Athens Itinerary Is Right for You?
So, you’re going to Athens. Do any of these itineraries sound intriguing?
Itinerary 1: First Time in Athens
Itinerary 2: Relaxed Day in Athens
Itinerary 3: Athens for Foodies
Check out the details of each itinerary below.

Itinerary 1: First Time in Athens
This guide aims to get travelers to the “must-see” spots in the city including the Acropolis and the neighborhood of Plaka. It also invites travelers to enjoy traditional Greek food and take in a new place.

The day starts with an Acropolis tour, and try to get tickets for the first available timeframe to avoid crazy crowds. Visit the Acropolis museum, too. Then spend the rest of the morning exploring the adorable neighborhood of Plaka.
When you start to get hungry, stop for lunch at a traditional Greek taverna, then explore Monastiraki. Do plenty of shopping as you make your way to the Panathenaic Stadium for a quick visit.
Then head back to your accommodation and regroup. Dinner will offer a beautiful view of the Acropolis all lit up. You’re dining at Attic Urban, maybe you have drinks before, but there’s no doubt you’ll be tired after a full day of walking Athens.

Itinerary 2: Relaxed Day in Athens
For travelers who want a slower pace and a few unique city experiences. This traveler is not concerned with making time for the Acropolis or being too much of a tourist.

Breakfast is relaxed and simple – choose a local café that catches your eye. Explore and take photos in the streets of Anafiotika. Here’s where you can browse boutiques and Greek shops, but you have nowhere you have to be.
When the afternoon comes around, enjoy a leisurely Greek lunch. (Key word: leisurely) Take your time with lunch and maybe try a Greek dish you’ve never have before. When you’re done, explore the historic center at your own pace.
The main event of the afternoon is a Greek wine tasting. Looking for options? Check out Cinque Wine Bar & Deli or Athens Wine Tasting before heading to dinner at a local Taverna. Find some live music to end the night, and that’s the day!
Itinerary 3: Athens for Foodies
Ideal for anyone who wants to discover Athens through its bakeries, tavernas, local food spots, and even indulge in a food tour.

For this itinerary, you’re going to start your day and food adventures with breakfast at a traditional Greek bakery. Have some coffee and something savory. After breakfast, embark on a walk around the city, stop for a pastry, or try a traditional koulouri. Explore Athens Central Market as you savor the day.
Here’s the real star of the show: take a Greek food tour. There’s so many different options out there: Greek food walk tour, street food tour, hidden gem food tour and more. I love using Viator to find different food tour experiences. Enjoy historical information and learn about the city as a local guide takes you to great authentic places to try.
Break up the day by stopping for a Greek coffee break – have you tried a freddo espresso yet? And once you’ve spent some time off your feet, shop for Greek specialties including olives, herbs and honey.
For sunset, you’re heading to a very famous sunset viewpoint: Philopappos Hill. Make sure you time it right so you walk up to the viewpoint with time to spare before the sun is down for the evening. The last stop of the day is dinner at a traditional Greek taverna for one last bite of Athens.
Tips for Planning One Day in Athens
Start early. Visiting popular attractions earlier in the day can help you avoid some of the crowds (and the heat during the warmer months!)

Book major attractions ahead of time. If visiting the Acropolis is on your list, check the official ticketing information buy your entry ticket well in advance.
Wear comfortable shoes. Athens is a city best explored on foot, but there’s definitely uneven pavement, hills, and plenty of walking.

Choose the itinerary that fits your travel style. These itineraries are starting points, not strict schedules. Swap activities around based on your interests, where you’re staying, and how much time you want to spend at each stop.

Final Thoughts: Making the Most of 24 Hours in Athens
One day in Athens may not be enough to see everything, but it can be enough to experience the city’s history, food, and unique atmosphere.
If you have more time in Greece, consider adding another day or two to explore more of Athens, or use the city as a starting point for an island-hopping adventure.
